Mohammad Rizwan’s NCCIA Inquiry Delayed Over Alleged Non-Cooperation

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) inquiry into Pakistan cricket players Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq has been delayed due to the alleged non-cooperation of the wicketkeeper-batter. The investigation, which centers around online betting and gambling in Pakistan cricket, as well as alleged leaks of information from the team's dressing room during a Test series against England, was launched after suspicious materials were flagged during cyber patrols.

Rizwan's mobile phones were seized during the series, and both players were required to appear before the NCCIA in Lahore earlier this month. However, no final findings have been announced against either cricketer, and the inquiry remains in its initial stages.

Investigators have attempted to contact Rizwan multiple times, requesting his cooperation with the probe. On some occasions, he was unreachable, while at other times he claimed he would consult his lawyer before responding. The NCCIA plans to reach out to him again on Monday. If he fails to cooperate, the agency may issue a formal notice and take additional legal action.

Investigators are seeking Rizwan's attendance during the forensic examination of his mobile phone, asserting that his presence is crucial for the process. Should the agency opt for alternative methods, there is a risk of data loss, which could be detrimental to both parties.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to probe the issue involving Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq. Imam, following an initial hesitation, has reportedly begun cooperating with investigators, and his mobile phone forensic examination is now underway.

The purpose of the inquiry is to uncover the facts and, if no violations are found, clear both players swiftly. The NCCIA has also offered to dispatch an investigation team to Rizwan's residence if he is unable to visit their office. The agency emphasizes that the investigation is not in conflict with the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Code of Conduct and asserts that neither the NCCIA nor the ICC has communicated about the matter.

Concerns regarding Rizwan have been addressed by the NCCIA, stating that those running social media campaigns are not acting in the cricketer's best interests. However, sources close to Rizwan assert that he has not received a formal notice from the NCCIA yet and claims that his first notice was sent via WhatsApp. He also questions what the allegations are, why he is being called, and if someone can accompany him during the inquiry.
