Mohamad Hasan says Malaysia sought for Hague Group role due to firm legal stance

NEW YORK, Sept 28 — Malaysia's Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, revealed that several countries have approached the nation to assume the role of co-chair of The Hague Group alongside South Africa. This opportunity would allow the two countries to jointly manage the group and coordinate action against violations of international law, according to Hasan.

The request stems from Malaysia's strong stance on these issues across various international platforms. Speaking at a press conference following the delivery of Malaysia's national statement at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) on Saturday, Hasan emphasized that the matter necessitates Cabinet approval, specifically from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The Hague Group, established on January 31, 2025, by countries including Malaysia and South Africa, aims to take coordinated legal and diplomatic action to defend international law, particularly in relation to the Palestinian issue. Currently, Malaysia is serving as a co-sponsor of the group. Hasan explained that joining such an organization would enable Malaysia to amplify its voice on the international stage by collaborating with nations sharing similar positions.

The Foreign Minister also highlighted that Malaysia employs other platforms, such as the G77 and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to unify and coordinate common stances and actions. Hasan was in New York from September 23 to 27, leading the Malaysian delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
