Malaysia diminta jadi pengerusi bersama Hague Group, kata Mohamad

Malaysia has been proposed as a co-chair of the Hague Group by several countries, alongside South Africa, according to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan. The suggestion stems from Malaysia's strong stance on various international law, human rights, and other issues in numerous international forums, as stated by Hasan during Malaysia's statement at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

However, the proposal has not yet been brought to the cabinet for approval, particularly by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The Hague Group, established in January 2025 by eight countries including Malaysia and South Africa, aims to coordinate legal and diplomatic actions in addressing international law violations related to Palestine. Currently, Colombia and South Africa are designated as co-chairs, while Malaysia is among the founding members.

Mohamad emphasized the importance of groups like the Hague Group, the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Group of 77 (G77) as they enable nations with similar positions to align their views, share them with the UN, and contribute to the decision-making process. "We know Malaysia is not a powerful country. If we stand alone, our voice will not go far. That's why Malaysia joins a group of countries that allows us to express a united position," he said.

He also highlighted ASEAN as another platform where middle powers can collectively enhance their influence in addressing global issues. "When ASEAN speaks, it is usually supported by the international community," he added. However, Mohamad warned that ASEAN must be cautious in handling global issues to avoid appearing to champion specific interests.

Instead, he stressed that the bloc should focus on issues such as human rights and international law. "When such matters occur, ASEAN will speak on behalf of its 11 member countries," he concluded.
