Mancini enjoys first win since return as Italy boss

Roberto Mancini secured his first victory since returning as Italy's manager with a convincing 4-1 win over Turkey in the UEFA Nations League. The 61-year-old took charge of the Azzurri for a second time in April following Gennaro Gattuso's departure, after the team failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. Mancini had previously led Italy from 2018 to 2023, securing a memorable Euro 2020 title by defeating England in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Mancini's return to the Italy manager's seat was marred by a home defeat to Belgium during his first game, raising questions about the impact of failing to qualify for the World Cup. However, this match showcased a significantly improved Italian side, as they raced into a three-goal lead in the first half. Brentford defender Michael Kayode marked his international debut with a goal, capitalizing on a pass from midfielder Pio Esposito to put Italy ahead.

Alessandro Bastoni added a ninth-minute goal through a corner, and Davide Frattesi doubled the lead with a well-taken finish after a parried shot by Kayode.

Turkey, managed by former Italy striker Vincenzo Montella, faced a hostile reception from their fans during halftime, reflecting their disappointing World Cup performance where they exited at the group stage. Despite pulling a goal back early in the second half through Baris Alper Yilmaz, who scored his sixth international goal, poor defending proved to be their downfall once again.

The visitors quickly restored their advantage in the 50th minute when Esposito headed in a rebound after Sandro Tonali's shot hit the post. While Turkey showed resilience and fought hard to get back into the game, the damage was done in the first half, securing a comfortable victory for Italy.
