Mancini enjoys first win since return as Italy boss

Roberto Mancini secured his first victory since becoming Italy's manager, as the Azzurri triumphed over Turkey in the Nations League. The 61-year-old was reinstated as Italy's manager in April, following the departure of Gennaro Gattuso, who had overseen their failure to qualify for a third successive World Cup. Mancini, who previously led Italy from 2018 to 2023, clinching Euro 2020 glory by beating England in the final at Wembley, faced mounting pressure upon his return as he suffered a home loss to Belgium in their inaugural match.

This was a marked improvement, with Italy storming into a three-goal lead in the first half. Brentford defender Michael Kayode scored his first international goal, capitalizing on a pass from Pio Esposito to put Italy ahead. Alessandro Bastoni had put Italy ahead in the ninth minute with a corner kick, followed by Davide Frattesi's second goal after Kayode's shot was saved.

Turkey, managed by former Italy forward Vincenzo Montella, received a timely reminder of their woes from the World Cup as they exited at the group stage. Despite scoring an early goal through Baris Alper Yilmaz, who made it his sixth international strike, Turkey's defensive frailties ultimately proved their downfall.
