LG Chem, Volkswagen partner on next-generation automotive materials

LG Chem has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Volkswagen Group to collaborate on developing advanced and environmentally-friendly materials for use in vehicles. The signing ceremony took place at the LG Twin Towers' Yeouido financial district in Seoul. Stefan Gramse, who is responsible for exterior parts procurement at Volkswagen Group, along with LG Chem officials from its petrochemicals division, were present at the signing event.

Under the terms of the agreement, both companies aim to utilize LG Chem's acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and engineering plastics to create lighter vehicles, enhance performance, and develop innovative new plastics and composite materials. These materials, which are high-performance plastics recognized for their impact strength, durability, and ease of processing, are commonly found in both car exteriors and interiors, as well as in home appliance casings.

In addition to these goals, Volkswagen has expressed interest in incorporating LG Chem's post-consumer recycled plastics, which are derived from discarded consumer products, into future vehicle designs. The partnership also explores the use of more cost-effective materials for the interiors and exteriors of Volkswagen's principal car brands.
