Kyiv shoppers feel the pinch from Russian strikes

Eight people were killed in strikes across Ukraine a day after Russia vowed to achieve its war aims, authorities said on Sunday. Russian attacks on Ukraine's capital intensified in the fifth year of the invasion, with Ukraine accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting civilians as the country prepares for another harsh winter. Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi reported the latest fatalities, stating that Russian strikes hit a children's center in Sumy, killing three people including a 16-year-old girl.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed three people were killed in night-time strikes on Zaporizhzhia region, while a Russian drone strike in Kyiv claimed one life. Additional casualties were reported in the Odesa region, with one person killed and six wounded by a massive strike. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported three wounded in the capital, including two teenagers aged 16.

Russian strikes damaged numerous civilian infrastructure sites in Kyiv, including 16 homes, a warehouse, and a production facility. Russian strikes across Ukraine reportedly targeted housing and other civilian facilities, with over 2,200 drones, 1,650 aerial bombs, and 38 missiles dropped in the past week, according to Zelenskyy.

Russia denied targeting civilians, while also claiming to have seized a border village in Ukraine's eastern Kharkiv region. Efforts to end the war through US-led talks have failed, and the UN has noted the increasing civilian toll as both sides become more entrenched.
