Anthology of essays for and against RSS ideology launched

The anthology "Saffron Shadows: The RSS, A Century of Influence" was officially unveiled in Delhi on Sunday, bringing together perspectives from both supporters and detractors of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The compendium, edited by writer Leher Sethi and social activist, encapsulates essays penned by Sangh ideologues as well as those critical of its ideology. The book is coincidentally released on the centenary of the RSS's establishment.

The event saw participation from individuals who have been affiliated with the RSS for up to eight decades, alongside those who oppose its ideology. Among the dissenters was Rajya Sabha MP and Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh. Earlier, during the launch, Om Books International's publisher, Ajay Mago, emphasized the relevance of the book, citing the RSS's centenary year as a pivotal moment.

According to Mago, the anthology serves to illuminate the diverse viewpoints towards the Sangh, ranging from viewing it as a symbol of cultural identity, discipline, service, and organizational robustness to perceiving it as a force exerting ideological sway over the societal and political landscapes of India, thereby questioning the very foundations of Indian democracy.

Journalist and editor Shweta Punj, speaking at the launch, criticized the RSS for its enigmatic nature, asserting that it remains deeply entrenched in contemporary India, despite its ideological rivals, such as communism, facing significant challenges to their survival. She highlighted the organization's enduring influence. However, Sanjay Singh, echoing concerns over the RSS's inclusiveness and representation, questioned the organization's approach to nationalism.

Singh drew particular attention to the recent controversy surrounding the invocation of Vande Mataram, contending that the RSS embodies a restricted mindset, attempting to impose its specific interpretation of nationalism onto the broader populace.
