Anthropic releases Sonnet 5.5, which it calls a significantly cheaper, faster work partner

Anthropic has unveiled Sonnet 5.5, positioning it as a more cost-effective and swift alternative to its previous offering. According to the AI lab, Sonnet 5.5 excels at handling routine tasks such as coding and drafting office documents. Sonnet 5, the model's predecessor, was introduced approximately three months prior. The key highlight of Sonnet 5.5 is its speed, boasting a 30 percent improvement over its predecessor, coupled with a substantially reduced token burn rate.

In Anthropic's model hierarchy, Sonnet falls below Opus in terms of power, but its agility makes it more advantageous in specific scenarios. Notably, Sonnet 5.5 outperforms Opus 5.5 on agentic coding tasks, possibly due to its capacity to deploy multiple agents without breaching cost limits. Furthermore, Sonnet 5.5 is expected to adhere to the same cyber safeguards as Opus, making it the first Sonnet model to receive this level of protection.

Anthropic also intends to roll out a newer version of Haiku, its smallest model, in the coming weeks, though no specific release date has been announced. Recently, other tech giants like OpenAI and Meta have joined the race with fresh model releases, including OpenAI's upgraded Sol and Luna models and Meta's offering for its smart glasses.
