Anthropic upgrades Claude with new Sonnet 5.5 model, details here

Anthropic has unveiled an upgraded version of its Claude Sonnet model, with the new Sonnet 5.5 model replacing Sonnet 5 since June. The company's Claude AI suite currently includes three main models: Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus, with Fable/Mythos being the highest tier. The introduction of the new Sonnet 5.5 model follows the launch of Opus 5.5 last week.

Anthropic announced that Sonnet 5.5 excels at everyday tasks with clear objectives, such as debugging code and crafting polished documents, slides, and spreadsheets. The company also emphasizes its design capabilities, including refining user interfaces and producing slides that closely adhere to templates, requiring minimal editing.

Testers have noted that Sonnet 5.5 is a more effective collaborator than Sonnet 5, producing clearer writing and operating at a speed that is ideal for rapid iteration on less complex tasks. Notably, Sonnet 5.5 maintains the same pricing as its predecessor: $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens, and $0.20 per million cache reads. Furthermore, Anthropic claims that Sonnet 5.5 is faster, generating output more than 30% quicker than Sonnet 5, and is the fastest Sonnet model to date.

With cybersecurity capabilities on par with Opus 5, Sonnet 5.5 is the first Sonnet model to incorporate safeguards and fallbacks comparable to those used for Anthropic's most powerful models. Its biology safeguards remain unchanged from Sonnet 5, targeting a narrow set of high-risk requests while leaving routine software development and most life sciences work unaffected.
