Adhere strictly to safety measures – SEMA warns canoe users in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, has issued a stern warning to boat users across the state to strictly adhere to safety measures, especially in the face of strong winds and adverse weather conditions. Speaking on the recent canoe accident in the state, SEMA Executive Secretary Hannafi Yakubu referred to the case where four girls lost their lives when a boat carrying eight people overturned in Dudduru Lake, near Kwadige village in Dutse Local Government Area.

Another similar incident in Malamawar Yandutse village of Ringim Local Government Area claimed ten lives. SEMA attributes these unfortunate events to overloading and the use of antiquated boats by their owners. The agency firmly stated that they will not tolerate such incidents and are committed to ensuring that all boat users observe safety measures to prevent further loss of lives and property.

State Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Danladi Sankara expressed the state government's concern over the frequent canoe accidents and the steps being taken to address the issue. The government is making efforts to provide new boats and life jackets to canoe owners to minimize accidents. SEMA has also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated the urgency for canoe operators and passengers to prioritize safety and avoid traveling on waterways during dangerous weather conditions.
