‘Where is Nigeria’s President?’ Obi queries Tinubu’s prolonged absence

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has joined others in questioning the whereabouts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The former Anambra State governor has taken to his official X account to voice his concerns. Tinubu departed for a three-week working vacation in Europe on August 30, 2026, as part of his annual leave, according to official statements.

However, there has been growing unease among opposition leaders and civil society groups, as the expected return has not materialized. Tinubu has not returned to his executive duties in Abuja or publicly attended international events. This absence has especially raised questions when juxtaposed with Ghana's dynamic President, John Dramani Mahama, who recently delivered a remarkable address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Obi highlighted the contrast, asking where Nigeria's president is during these critical international gatherings, especially considering the nation's current economic and security challenges. Though Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the UN meeting, Obi emphasized that this does not alleviate the broader concern about the continuity of governance.
