Passenger dies after commercial bus crashes in Lagos

A male passenger perished after a commercial Volkswagen bus collided with a median pole at Ogunlana Junction in Ojuelegba, Surulere, Lagos. The tragic accident, reported by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), occurred when the vehicle veered into the median pole, as per preliminary security reports. Witnesses stated that the bus driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and had been driving recklessly before the crash.

One passenger, attempting to escape the uncontrolled vehicle, jumped out and suffered severe injuries upon impact with the ground, ultimately succumbing to the injuries. LASTMA swiftly responded to the scene, deploying emergency traffic measures, securing the area, and removing the deceased and the damaged bus from the road. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and using mechanically defective vehicles on public roads.

The LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, called on motorists to perform regular inspections on their vehicles, focusing on crucial safety components such as braking systems, tires, and steering mechanisms. He also expressed condolences to the deceased passenger's family and reiterated LASTMA's commitment to responding promptly to road incidents, managing traffic effectively, and protecting lives on Lagos roads.
