Trump declines to say if Ukraine can manufacture Patriot missiles to fend off Russian attacks

President Donald Trump refrained from confirming whether Ukraine would be permitted to manufacture Patriot missiles to counter Russian attacks, a claim made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the previous day. The two leaders convened on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Zelensky stated on Friday that during their meeting, Trump mentioned that Ukraine "will receive a license to manufacture Patriot missiles."

However, when questioned by CNN on Saturday about the possibility of a licensing agreement, Trump affirmed that they discussed numerous topics, expressing strong agreement on many of them. Before departing for a college football game in Tennessee, Trump shifted the discussion's focus towards urging Ukraine and Russia to reach a deal to end the conflict.

He emphasized, "I want him to make a deal," referring to Zelensky, and similarly encouraged Putin to engage in a settlement with Zelensky. UAVs, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, are crucial weapons capable of neutralizing ballistic missiles, but a recent global shortage of supplies has prompted numerous countries to enhance their defense systems, significantly impacting Ukraine's access to interceptors.

Zelensky has been advocating for the US to enable Ukraine to produce these interceptors, capitalizing on hints from Trump in July that such an arrangement, potentially involving US companies, might be feasible. In his address before the United Nations General Assembly, Zelensky referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as "patient zero," asserting that the greater freedom Putin has to act, the more perilous the world becomes for everyone else.

The absence of Patriot interceptors has exacerbated Ukraine's challenges in repelling Russian attacks, resulting in a surge in fatalities, such as seven deaths on Friday during daytime drone strikes in Kyiv.
