The Asian Games should be called the 'China Games' as its domination continues

The Asian Games, currently underway in Nagoya, Japan, have often been dubbed the "China Games" due to China's overwhelming dominance in the event. As of the second week of the two-week competition, China has secured an impressive 107 gold medals, compared to Japan's 31. Despite the overall medal count being slightly higher for China, the country still leads Japan 176-129 in total medals through the results announced on Saturday.

The Asian Games attract roughly 11,000 athletes, a number surpassing the Summer Olympics in Paris two years ago, which had approximately 10,700 participants. Similar to the Olympics, the disparity between the top and bottom performing nations is stark. Four countries have only won one bronze medal each - Bangladesh, Brunei, Mongolia, and Syria. Additionally, six countries have yet to win any medals.

The swimming events have been particularly successful for China, with Chinese and Japanese athletes dominating the global swimming scene. In the six-day swimming competition, China amassed 30 gold medals, with Zhang Zhanshuo winning seven golds and four in every freestyle distance. Yu Zidi, a 13-year-old Chinese swimmer, has also made waves, winning three golds in the 200 butterfly, 200 and 400 individual medleys.

China's prowess extends beyond swimming, with athletes performing across various sports such as kabaddi, sepaktakraw, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, padel, soft tennis, teqball, and wushu. These sports, which aren't typically featured in the Olympics, add to the uniqueness of the event. The inclusion of esports, a first for the Asian Games, further highlights the diverse range of sports on offer.

Japan, the host country, has faced criticism for logistical issues such as inadequate accommodations, transport problems, and a lack of interest from sponsors. Organizers have apologized for these issues, stating that they are taking responsibility for the mistakes.
