Taiwan says US understands defence needs as $14 billion arms package remains on hold

Taiwan has assured the United States that it understands Washington's defense needs, despite a roughly $14 billion arms package remaining on hold, according to Taiwan's Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi. Chen stated that despite President Donald Trump's discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Washington's policy towards Taiwan remains unchanged. The Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister cited repeated assurances from US officials that the US comprehends Taiwan's defense requirements.

Chen noted that Taiwan has been awaiting the US President's approval of the new arms sales package since May, following a $11 billion deal in December. Trump halted the latest package after meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing. China has been investing resources into its military despite economic difficulties, Chen said, as Taiwan faces a severe situation in the Taiwan Strait.

The US ambassador to China, David Perdue, stated on Friday that there had been no change in Trump's Taiwan policy, including on arms sales. The $14 billion package has been in limbo for months, with President Trump yet to approve the sale. The package, which follows a $11 billion arms sale approved in December, remains pending as the US balances its defense commitments to Taipei with its broader ties with Beijing.
