‘Star Wars’: Jon Watts to Direct First Film in New Trilogy

Jon Watts, known for directing the first three Tom Holland Spider-Man films, has been chosen to direct the inaugural movie in a new "Star Wars" trilogy, according to TheWrap. Simon Kinberg, a prolific writer and producer, will collaborate with Watts on the script. Initially, reports suggested that this new trilogy would consist of chapters 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, following the conclusion of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" in 2019.

However, some believe it will be a standalone series, akin to the trilogies previously developed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and Rian Johnson for the company. The film is being called a "new saga." Kinberg, who was part of a team working on new projects for Disney after Lucasfilm's acquisition by the company, has experience with "Star Wars," having consulted on J.J.

Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and co-created the animated series "Star Wars: Rebels" with Dave Filoni. Following "The Rise of Skywalker's" release, several "Star Wars" projects, including a standalone film from Taika Waititi, a movie centered on Rey from the latest trilogy, and a "Lando" movie from Donald Glover, have been announced but not yet realized. Lucasfilm did not provide a comment on the matter.
