Signalling disruption delays KTM Komuter, ETS by 4 to 5 hours

The disruption to the KTM Komuter and ETS services in Malaysia lasted for up to five hours on Monday, affecting both Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur routes. The national rail operator, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), confirmed that KTM Komuter Train No. 2389 was delayed by 230 minutes, while the ETS service EP9138 (KL Sentral-Butterworth) suffered a 305-minute delay.

Preliminary investigations by KTMB revealed that the disruption originated from damage to a system component, which sparked and disrupted the signalling system. However, the exact cause of the component damage remains under investigation. The issue had a ripple effect on other trains passing through the sector, particularly those heading north, further exacerbating the delays.

KTMB explained that the Rawang-Ipoh double-tracking upgrading works were ongoing at the time, including along the Kalumpang route. These works required schedule adjustments, adding to the already significant delays. Consequently, repair works were completed at 5:15am, and the first Komuter train from Tanjung Malim departed at 5:45am. Despite the completion of repairs, KTM Komuter and ETS services were still delayed by 30 minutes due to the signalling fault along the Batang Kali route.

KTMB expressed sincere apologies to affected passengers and assured them that full fare refunds would be provided to those who opted not to continue their journey following the disruption, provided the necessary procedures were followed.
