S. Korea captures gold in women's sabre fencing team event

South Korea claimed victory in the women's sabre fencing team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, securing their fourth fencing title of the competition. Consisting of fencers Choi Se-bin, Jeon Ha-young, Seo Ji-yeon, and Kim Jeong-mi, the South Korean team defeated Japan's Misaki Emura, Yui Sano, Yuina Kaneko, and Seri Ozaki with a score of 45-31.

Unlike individual medalists, the South Korean team had not won any medals in previous competitions but triumphed together in the team event. Choi Se-bin had previously been a member of the 2023 Asian Games team that secured bronze, finishing behind Uzbekistan and Japan.

The team event comprised nine head-to-head bouts, each lasting three minutes and concluding when a team's score reached a multiple of five. A team scored 45 points first or held a higher point total than their opponent at the end of the ninth bout to emerge victorious. Choi Se-bin initiated the match by defeating Emura 5-2, and Jeon Ha-young followed with a 5-4 victory against Sano.

Seo Ji-yeon faced early challenges from Kaneko but ultimately secured a win, contributing to the South Korean team's impressive performance in the women's sabre fencing team event.
