(Asiad) S. Korea disqualified in men's 4x100m relay at Asian Games

In the women's sabre fencing team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, South Korea claimed gold, securing their fourth fencing title of the competition. The team, consisting of Choi Se-bin, Jeon Ha-young, Seo Ji-yeon, and Kim Jeong-mi, defeated Japan's Misaki Emura, Yui Sano, Yuina Kaneko, and Seri Ozaki with a score of 45-31 at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, south of Nagoya.

South Korean fencers did not win any individual medals earlier in the competition, but they triumphed as a team. Choi Se-bin participated in the 2023 Asian Games team that secured bronze, edging out Uzbekistan and Japan. Each bout in team fencing events is three minutes long and concludes when one team reaches a score that is a multiple of five. The team that achieves 45 points first or has more points than the opposing team at the end of the ninth bout emerges victorious.

Choi opened the match by defeating Emura 5-2, followed by Jeon's 5-4 victory over Sano. Seo Ji-yeon fought off early pressure from Kaneko, winning her duel 5-2 to push South Korea's lead to 15-8. Choi then faced Sano, responding with five points to counter Japan's initial four-point lead, putting South Korea ahead 20-12. Seo Ji-yeon secured two quick points against Emura, giving South Korea a 25-15 lead.

Despite an apparent knee injury to Seo, the team maintained their advantage, ultimately clinching the gold after Jeon secured the final point for South Korea's triumphant 35-19 score.
