MIPP asserts independent identity, denies riding on PAS’s coattails

The Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP) is an offshoot of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) that joined Perikatan Nasional (PN) in April 2024, officials reported. MIPP deputy president S Subramaniam dismissed analysts' views suggesting that MIPP is merely following PAS, stating that the party will pursue its own agenda and focus on the Indian community.

Subramaniam emphasized that a party's identity is defined by its people, principles, organization, leadership, and community support, not just its logo. Recent by-election and state election results showed MIPP garnered an average of 40% of the Indian community's votes, indicating it is recognized as an alternative for the community.

Subramaniam affirmed that MIPP's strategic decisions will be based on the party's interests and those of its members, not pundits' speculations. He also highlighted that MIPP maintains a strong central committee with expertise in political maneuvering. The party's membership is rooted in a political commitment to work with all PN components for the rakyat's benefit, without being subordinate to any specific party.

MIPP values its relationships with all PN elements, including PAS and Bersatu, despite recent disagreements between PAS and Bersatu. The opposition coalition is currently suspended by the Registrar of Societies. Subramaniam stressed that MIPP's cooperation is based on mutual respect and recognizing each party's identity and political interests, emphasizing that coalition politics requires each component to have a meaningful role and appropriate representation.
