MIPP asserts independent identity, denies riding on PAS’s coattails

The Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP), a faction of the MIC, has declared its distinct identity within the Perikatan Nasional coalition, rejecting the notion that it is merely following PAS. MIPP deputy president S Subramaniam emphasized that the party will not simply rely on others to determine its future course, and that its primary objective is to advocate for the Indian community.

Subramaniam dismissed the analysts' suggestion that the party's fate hinges on the logo it contests under, arguing that a party's identity is defined by its people, principles, organization, leadership, and the trust it earns from the community it represents.

Recent by-elections and state elections MIPP participated in demonstrated that the Indian-based party had secured an average of 40% of the Indian community's votes, signifying that MIPP has gained recognition as a viable alternative for the community. Subramaniam asserted that the party's strategic decisions will be guided by the interests of MIPP, its members, and the Indian community, rather than speculative commentary from pundits.

MIPP boasts a robust central committee with the requisite expertise to navigate politics and make the best decisions for the Indian community. Subramaniam underscored that the party's membership is based on a political understanding and a commitment to collaborate with all components for the benefit of the rakyat. He stressed that this stance should not be misconstrued as MIPP being subordinate to any specific party.

MIPP aims to maintain the unity of the Perikatan Nasional coalition and continues to prioritize its role as a strong political entity.

Former Selangor MIC Youth chief P Punithan leads MIPP, which came into existence in April 2024 when it joined Perikatan Nasional. Analysts have recently echoed doubts that MIPP and Gerakan would diverge significantly from PAS, even if the coalition faces deregistration due to a complaint filed by Bersatu. Despite a recent split between PAS and Bersatu, Subramaniam emphasized that MIPP values its relationships with all PN components, acknowledging that mutual respect and understanding of each party's unique identity and political interests are crucial for coalition cohesion.
