Bangkok closes more than 400 schools amid continued flooding

Bangkok will close more than 400 city-run schools on September 28 in response to ongoing flooding, according to Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. The city's flood situation has improved slightly after a low-pressure system that brought heavy rain shifted towards Myanmar. However, the heaviest rain is still expected to affect outer districts, with about 10 to 20 millimetres of rain anticipated per day in Bangkok.

Drainage remains a challenge as floodwater from surrounding areas continues to flow into canals. Kheha Rom Klao, a community of over 30,000 residents, has been particularly hard hit, with many evacuating to King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. The immediate priority is to support stranded residents who require food and essential assistance, including bedridden patients.

Officials are monitoring flood-stricken neighborhoods, particularly those near Khlong Saen Saep, Khlong Prem Prachakorn, Khlong Prawet, and Suan Luang. Major roads may see improvements within two to three days, but fully drying out communities could take up to two weeks. Work-from-home arrangements have been implemented for municipal employees, and schools will close for one day on September 28.
