Localised infrastructure boosts Qatar’s digital sovereignty agenda, says expert

Google Cloud is intensifying its local infrastructure and data sovereignty initiatives in Qatar, according to Alex Rutter, Google Cloud's managing director for AI in the UK, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). The primary objective is to facilitate companies and government entities in Qatar to retain sensitive operational data within the nation's borders.

Rutter emphasized Google's ongoing commitment to data sovereignty, a goal pursued for several years. The tech giant offers locally tailored infrastructure solutions, including dedicated data centers within Qatar, to align with stringent regulatory mandates. For some clients, this may involve regional data centers across Qatar and Amman.

Rutter acknowledged the complexity of deploying machine learning algorithms in local systems, noting Google Cloud's deployment of specialized hardware accelerators to ensure efficient processing of intricate data workloads. He added that the company is also bolstering physical storage capacity to support these operations. Maintaining cohesive cybersecurity and operational control across diverse IT architectures presents a significant challenge, especially as AI becomes more intricate and distributed.

Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise Platform aims to streamline governance and security protocols across various cloud environments and SaaS applications, providing a unified management layer for third-party assets.
