Iran says it will wait for official US response after Trump rejects Strait of Hormuz proposal

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran would await an official response from US negotiators following President Donald Trump's rejection of Tehran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian official accused Trump of making contradictory statements regarding negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Trump stated that Iran's proposal was not "acceptable" and suggested that Tehran was seeking a deal due to its "poor situation". Despite this, Araghchi expressed hope that an agreement could still be reached if both sides met certain conditions. These conditions were the same as those outlined in a June memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran.

Iran had raised the issue of reopening the strait and ending hostilities during recent UN General Assembly negotiations. The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route, has been effectively closed to commercial shipping since the start of the war in February. Trump dismissed Iran's deal, claiming the US already controlled the strait and that oil was still flowing through it.

Oman, currently mediating between the two nations, urged for continued dialogue to resolve the crisis and protect navigation through the strait. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker backed Trump's decision, calling Iran's proposal "half measures" and "illusory deals". US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted the impact of economic pressure measures imposed by the US on Iran, citing Turkey, Oman, and the UAE halting flights and transactions with Iranian airlines and banks respectively.
