Herzog voices solidarity with Jerusalem Reform synagogue after repeated attacks

President Isaac Herzog reached out to leaders of Jerusalem's Kol Haneshama Reform synagogue ahead of the start of Sukkot to show his support following a series of vandalism incidents against the building. In a conversation with Herzog, the community's rabbi, Oded Mazor, and its executive director, Anna Astmker, discussed the matter just before the Shabbat and festival began. The president inquired about the police investigation and the community's security concerns in light of the arrests of several suspects.

The synagogue in Jerusalem's Baka neighborhood has faced four reported attacks within a month. The first incident occurred on August 16, when youths broke a window, entered the prayer hall, damaged artwork, and removed pride flags displayed by the congregation. On September 13, eggs were thrown at worshipers outside the synagogue during the second day of Rosh Hashanah, though no injuries were reported.

Two more incidents happened around Yom Kippur, including an intruder removing a screen from a restroom window and another pride flag being taken away. Police investigations followed each of the incidents, with security camera footage provided to authorities.

Following the arrests of three minors suspected in the attacks, the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism accused the incidents of being driven by incitement against Reform Jews. The movement declared it would not be intimidated and would continue to welcome all to its synagogues. The congregation highlighted the support it received from neighboring congregations and residents, with Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion contacting Mazor and Deputy Mayor Yossi Havilio addressing the worshipers after Yom Kippur services.
