Fire Dept finds nine tiny rooms squeezed into office and turned into student dormitory in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU, September 27 - During the Ops Sepadu Premis Sarang Burung operation in Kuala Terengganu, the Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) discovered small student dormitories hidden within an office building. The second-floor premises contained nine compact rooms transformed into dormitories, alongside violations of multiple building safety regulations.

Terengganu JBPM director Nor Mahathir Muhammad explained that the inspection revealed the premises, among three others, had been originally licensed as office buildings but later converted into dormitories for workers and students. According to Muhammad, the operation targeted illegally altered shop premises and office spaces, with a focus on non-compliance with building regulations and fire safety standards.

The joint operation took place at four sites: Jalan Masjid Abidin, Jalan Engku Pengiran Anom 2, Jalan Engku Sar, and Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin. JBPM plans to issue a notice to the building owner or tenant to address the identified fire hazards. Failure to comply within the specified timeframe will result in a second inspection.
