Cientos de personas acampan en Sol por la vivienda: "O cae el rentismo, o cae el Gobierno"

Hundrads of people camped out in Madrid's Puerta del Sol on Sunday night to protest the housing crisis, demanding either an end to rent increases or the fall of the government. The protest began early Saturday evening, following a demonstration in central Madrid to condemn the eviction of Maricarmen, an elderly woman who had to leave her home after 70 years.

Banners read "no more rent increases or the fall of the government." The encampment, organized by the Madrid Renters' and Tenants' Union, involved setting up hundreds of tents near commercial establishments. Tens of thousands attended the protest, with representatives of the union distributing food, blankets, and information pamphlets about the housing situation in Spain.

The union plans to continue organizing and hopes the Council of Ministers will approve a decree on housing next Tuesday, addressing issues such as preventing evictions without alternative accommodation, promoting dignified rental housing, and banning short-term rental properties. Union spokesperson Valeria Racu expressed disappointment if the decree isn't announced, warning that it would signal a failure and potentially lead to the rise of fascism. She urged the government to take bold action against the "true invaders" - speculators.
