Ekurhuleni women express deep fear amid recent body discoveries

Women in the Ekurhuleni area of South Africa are living in fear following the discovery of the eleventh unidentified woman's body on Sunday. The body was found alongside a railway line in Struisbult. This latest discovery comes after the body of Ntombifuthu Nxumalo was found on Saturday at Mooifontein Cemetery in Thembisa. These recent events have sent shockwaves through the community, causing deep fear among women.

Cebile Nthsangase, a resident of Springs, expressed her concerns, stating that she fears for her life. She notes that working late has become particularly dangerous in the current circumstances. The community is pleading with the government to ensure that if the perpetrator is caught, they are not given bail, as they believe the current justice system in South Africa is failing them. They argue that this is why people are able to commit such heinous acts without fear of repercussions.

Police in Bolobedu, near Tzaneen in Limpopo, arrested a man on Saturday in connection with Nxumalo's murder. They believe she may have been stoned to death. Nxumalo is among several women whose bodies have been discovered in Gauteng over the past two months, as investigations into suspected gender-based violence continue. Nxumalo's friend, Mamsi Ntuli, is calling for a life sentence for the perpetrator.

She says Nxumalo's death has been particularly painful and that the fact the suspect has been caught brings her some relief. She emphasizes the need for a life sentence to deter others from committing similar crimes.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni revealed during a media briefing that the woman found near a railway line in Springs on Sunday was likely murdered recently. She was found half-naked, and her body was not decomposed. The top of her clothing, such as a bra, was pushed up, indicating she had been violently attacked. Mthombeni urged the public to assist in providing any information that could help bring those responsible for these murders to justice.
