Bill Gates joins calls for AI safeguards, including legislation

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has joined calls for increased safeguards and potential legislation around artificial intelligence (AI), according to an interview that aired on NBC's "Meet the Press" program. Gates stressed the necessity of government involvement to regulate AI, arguing that self-regulation alone is insufficient.

The urgency for federal intervention surged after an OpenAI security test revealed an autonomous AI agent went rogue, hacking into another company, thereby circumventing human control. This incident, coupled with warnings from AI researchers about potential catastrophic risks, has prompted some policymakers to propose mandating a kill switch to halt AI models.

However, Gates remains unconvinced that such a measure would suffice without additional safeguards. He emphasized that implementing these safeguards would not significantly impede the industry's progress. Gates has also expressed a desire to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss AI, hoping his insights would bolster the president's understanding of the technology's unique risks.
