[Asian Games] S. Korea captures gold in women's sabre fencing team event

On Sunday, South Korea secured a gold medal in the women's sabre fencing team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The team, comprised of Choi Se-bin, Jeon Ha-young, Seo Ji-yeon, and Kim Jeong-mi, defeated Japan's Misaki Emura, Yui Sano, Yuina Kaneko, and Seri Ozaki with a score of 45-31. The competition took place at Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, located south of Nagoya.

Interestingly, none of the South Korean fencers had won an individual medal in the tournament prior to this team victory. Choi Se-bin, however, had been part of the 2023 Asian Games team that had finished third, behind Uzbekistan and Japan. The South Korean team's success in fencing was evident, as they ultimately concluded the Games with a total of four gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze medals.

In team fencing events, matches consist of nine head-to-head bouts. Each bout lasts for three minutes, but concludes as soon as one team reaches a score that is a multiple of five. The team that first scores 45 points or accumulates more points than their opponent by the end of the ninth bout emerges victorious. In the first bout, Choi Se-bin outperformed Emura with a score of 5-2. Jeon Ha-young then followed suit in the second bout, defeating Sano 5-4.
