Sonakshi Sinha recalls telling father Shatrughan about Zaheer Iqbal: ‘Your dad will not agree’

Sonakshi Sinha, an Indian actress, shared her experience of discussing her relationship with her husband, Zaheer Iqbal, with her father, Shatrughan Sinha. During a conversation with Neha Dhupia on The Double Date show, Sonakshi revealed that she struggled to initiate the talk with her father because she had never had such discussions before. Her mother had warned her that her father would not agree to the marriage, causing her significant anxiety.

Upon finally confiding in her father, Shatrughan’s reaction left Sonakshi deeply emotional. He questioned why she had delayed informing him about the relationship and her love for Iqbal. Despite her initial hesitation, the couple’s mutual affection and commitment to each other eventually swayed him, making the situation even more poignant for Sonakshi.

Psychologist Neha Cadabam explained the unique nature of the father-daughter relationship, emphasizing how a father's voice continues to hold emotional weight even after the daughter becomes an adult. The support of a father often provides a sense of emotional safety, validation, and belief, which can contribute to a daughter's well-being and psychological health. Furthermore, a strong father-daughter bond is linked to higher self-esteem, emotional regulation, resilience, and the ability to form secure relationships.

In recent times, fathers are increasingly becoming more emotionally present in their children's lives due to factors such as enhanced awareness of child psychology and mental health, evolving gender roles, women's increased participation in the workforce, and flexible work arrangements. This shift in expectations of fatherhood can encourage daughters to take risks, knowing they have a strong emotional anchor to fall back on.
