SNAPSHOT | Anwar denies Putrajaya meddling in N Sembilan crisis; group urges review to FOI bill

Pendang, September 26 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim affirmed his commitment not to interfere with the decisions regarding the position of the Yang Di Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. He emphasized that any disputes involving the royal institution should be resolved in accordance with the Constitution and the law. According to Anwar, matters concerning royal rulers cannot be decided upon arbitrarily but must adhere to constitutional provisions.

During his speech at the Sebarkan Salam dan Pendang Berselawat Bersama Anwar Ibrahim programme, the Prime Minister stated that even if a decision made by the Undangs (a council of Malay rulers) is valid, its validity must be decided upon and resolved. He stressed the importance of protecting the constitutional monarchy system, where the royal institution is bound within the framework of the Constitution.

Anwar warned against the easy overthrow of a Ruler, emphasizing that Malaysia practices a constitutional monarchy and any action to remove or depose a Ruler must follow the conditions and processes stipulated in the state Constitution. He cautioned that the powers of the Prime Minister and Cabinet are also limited to what is outlined in the Constitution, and cannot be used to arbitrarily alter matters related to the Malay Rulers' institution.

The Prime Minister further urged for an amicable discussion on the issue, stating that he does not support the idea of overthrowing a Ruler so easily. He firmly defended the principle of the constitutional monarchy system, warning that if the monarchy was undermined, it would lead to its eventual disappearance from the country. Anwar acknowledged that the issue transcends political boundaries and is deeply rooted in the country's system, which must be safeguarded.

He clarified that the matter should not be viewed solely as a political issue, but as one that involves the core of the country's system that must be defended. Anwar emphasized that if Malays, including those from different ethnic backgrounds, divided over the Malay Rulers, it would threaten the nation's identity. He stressed that hatred, anger, and differences of opinion have clouded the judgment and senses of Malaysians, highlighting the need to protect the country's constitutional monarchy system.
