Anwar denies trying to interfere in Negri Sembilan royal crisis

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly denied any attempt to interfere in the recent Negri Sembilan royal crisis. He emphasized his commitment to preserving the constitutional monarchy system in the country. Anwar expressed concern that any hasty decision by the Undangs to remove the Yang di-Pertuan Besar could jeopardize the entire constitutional monarchy system.

He reminded that the Negri Sembilan laws outline specific grounds for removal, such as mental incapacity, loss of sight or speech, disqualification under Islamic law, acts detrimental to the ruler's dignity, or deliberate disregard of the state constitution. The Attorney-General's firm decision led to the conclusion that such removal should not be easy.

Anwar warned of potential consequences, suggesting that if left unchecked, the prime minister and cabinet might consider replacing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as well, which would not be within their authority. He clarified that the prime minister is responsible for administering the country and has limits to his power, and cannot amend the Constitution on matters concerning Islam, the Malay language, Malay special rights, and the institution of the rulers.

Anwar reiterated his stance on defending the Malay rulers, stating that the constitutional monarchy system should coexist harmoniously with the executive branch of government, and the country's stability depends on its continued existence. He suggested discussing the matter properly, rather than hastily removing the ruler. Anwar distanced himself from the actions of Negri Sembilan's Menteri Besar and his executive council, describing their proclamation to remove Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz as rude and uncivilized.
