Anwar firm on not interfering in Negeri Sembilan ruler’s position

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim firmly stated that he would not interfere with the position of the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. He affirmed that any dispute surrounding the royal institution should be resolved in accordance with the Constitution and the law. According to Anwar, the issue should not be seen solely as a political matter, but as one that involves the system of monarchy that must be defended.

He emphasized that any action concerning a Ruler cannot be taken arbitrarily, but must be based on constitutional provisions. The Prime Minister clarified that the Undang's decision, whether valid or invalid, needs to be decided and resolved. Anwar stressed that issues involving the Ruler should not be taken lightly, as Malaysia practices a constitutional monarchy that safeguards the royal institution within the framework of the Constitution.

He cautioned against the arbitrary removal or deposition of a Ruler, stating that such actions are subject to the conditions and processes specified in the state Constitution. Anwar expressed his disagreement with the idea of overthrowing a Ruler so easily, emphasizing that Malaysia's system cannot function that way, which is why the Constitution is very clear.

He reiterated that the powers of the prime minister and Cabinet are limited by the Constitution and cannot be used to arbitrarily change matters related to the Malay Rulers' institution.
