SCR plans to develop Malkajgiri railway station as major terminal with new lines and revamped platforms

Malkajgiri railway station, located three kilometers from Secunderabad Railway Station, is set to undergo significant development as a major terminal hub. The South Central Railway (SCR) has unveiled plans to add three new railway lines and expand platform infrastructure using available railway land, aiming to enhance the station's capacity to handle trains.

Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), the station has already been revamped at a cost of ₹27.61 crore, featuring a new entrance, upgraded booking office, improved flooring, passenger lounges, and lifts and escalators on all three platforms. However, the makeover is only one aspect of a larger plan. By laying two additional lines from the Lallaguda side adjacent to Platform 3 and adding a new platform alongside Platform 1, Malkajgiri is projected to have four platforms and six lines, including two loop lines.

This expansion is expected to ease congestion at Kacheguda station and provide more train halts for local commuters, who currently have to travel to Kacheguda by road for trains like Venkatadri and Tungabhadra that pass through Malkajgiri without stopping. While the redevelopment is projected to cost around ₹42 crore, some railway officials suggest better coordination between departments could have minimized duplication of effort and reduced costs.
