Sanwo-Olu’s wife urges patience over trash collection delays

The wife of Lagos State's governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has encouraged residents to exercise patience regarding delays in waste collection services. She made this appeal during a monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Mafoluku, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area. Residents had complained about the irregularity of Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste collection operators, leading to complaints about delays in waste evacuation.

A resident, Adebayo Agbalara, expressed frustration with the PSP operators' irregularity, stating that the PSP operators were not coming regularly to pack their waste. The First Lady acknowledged some of the concerns raised by residents, such as PSP operators charging more for services and facing delays in reaching waste disposal sites.

She emphasized that the government was working towards finding a new strategy for waste disposal and management. The First Lady urged residents to remain patient, describing the current situation as a "teething problem" that would eventually be resolved. Sanwo-Olu also commended residents for bagging their waste rather than dumping it near drainage channels and praised the inclusion of schoolchildren in the sanitation exercise to promote environmental consciousness.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, reported increased public participation in the sanitation exercise, with residents now voluntarily participating in cleaning their homes and streets. He urged residents to stop indiscriminate dumping and adopt waste separation practices from the point of generation, noting that recyclable materials could even generate income.
