Govt to bolster defence over risk of ‘major power’ clash in South China Sea

The Malaysian government is exploring ways to bolster its national defence, citing the potential for a clash between major powers in the South China Sea. Defence Minister Khaled Nordin emphasized that the primary concern is the risk of such a conflict spilling over into Malaysia, particularly affecting the state of Sabah. He noted that the Philippines and the United States have heightened their defence collaboration in the disputed maritime region due to China's actions in the area.

This has resulted in the development of new military bases, including one on Balabac Island in Palawan, located approximately 50 kilometers from Sabah's Banggi Island. Since 2014, China has asserted control over a significant portion of the South China Sea, which is vital for global shipping, trade, and fishing. However, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam contest Beijing's claims.

According to the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, a US think tank, a Chinese coast guard vessel has been operating in Malaysian waters daily since January 1, 2024, up until September 27 of the same year. While Malaysia respects the Philippines' decision to enhance its defence capabilities in partnership with Washington, Khaled highlighted that the establishment of the Balabac Island base, especially due to its proximity to Sabah, requires attention from Putrajaya.

He stated that every nation has the right to bolster its national defence, but as a neighboring country, Malaysia is keenly observing the situation and considering necessary protective measures.
