Russia accuses Europe of seeking to thwart Ukraine talks

United Nations: Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized Europe on Saturday in a UN speech, accusing the continent of attempting to hinder peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. Lavrov vowed that Russia would achieve its Ukraine objectives, regardless of the circumstances, focusing on eliminating the security threat from Ukraine and restoring peaceful life.

Germany's Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, met with Lavrov earlier that day, marking the first such encounter between the two nations' foreign ministers since the start of the war. The meeting took place amid escalating tensions, including allegations of a Russian drone attack on Leipzig airport and the closure of consulate offices.

Wadephul called on Russia to cease its aggressive actions, emphasizing that further incidents would not deter Germany's support for Ukraine. Lavrov, who last met with a German foreign minister in January 2022, accused Germany of wanting war and is among Russia's most vocal anti-Western officials.

In recent days, European countries, including Germany, have expressed concerns over escalating Russian sabotage activities on their soil. Direct flights between Russia and Germany have been suspended since the invasion. The UN meeting, closed to the media, focused on Ukraine, with Germany condemning Russia's aggression against the Ukrainian civilian population.

Lavrov also stated Russia's readiness to aid in stabilizing the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf region amidst the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
