Russia accuses Europe of seeking to thwart Ukraine talks

Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov accused Europe of actively attempting to obstruct peace negotiations over the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv during a United Nations speech. He vowed that his country's Ukraine objectives would be realized, regardless of the situation, stating that the threat to Russian security would be eliminated and a peaceful life would return.

This statement came after Germany's foreign minister Johann Wadephul met with Lavrov, marking the first such meeting between Moscow and Berlin's foreign ministers since before the war. This meeting occurred amid heightened tensions between the two nations, including accusations of a drone attack on Leipzig airport by Russia and the closure of each country's consulate.

Wadephul urged Russia to abandon its dangerous path of escalation vis-a-vis Germany, Europe, and NATO, emphasizing that incidents such as the Leipzig attack or further hybrid assaults would not deter Germany's support for Ukraine. Lavrov had previously met with German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock in January 2022, just a month before Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Lavrov has recently accused Germany of wanting war again, positioning himself as one of Russia's most vocal anti-Western officials. European countries, including Germany, have expressed concerns over increased Russian sabotage activities on their soil, with direct flights between Russia and Germany suspended since the invasion. The recent meeting in the UN was closed to media, but focused heavily on Ukraine, with Germany condemning Russia's ongoing aggression against the Ukrainian civilian population.

Lavrov also mentioned Russia's willingness to help stabilize the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf region amid the US-Iran conflict, emphasizing the need for trust and a stable regional architecture.
