Iraq seeks US exemption from ban on Iranian airlines

Iraq is seeking an exemption from the US ban on Iranian airlines, as the restriction has caused significant disruption to travel for patients, students and pilgrims. All Iraqi airports have now implemented the ban, resulting in major problems at the holy city of Najaf, a key destination for Iranian flights to Iraq. The Iraqi government is engaged in direct negotiations with the United States to secure an exemption for certain airports, allowing flights to resume for humanitarian reasons such as medical treatment, education, religious visits, and the benefit of civilians.

Iranian airlines primarily serve Iraqi Shia pilgrims travelling to Iran's holy cities, Iranians visiting sites in Iraq, students studying in Iran and patients seeking medical treatment. The ban has left many Iraqis scrambling for solutions, with some fearing they will lose access to treatment in Iran or be stranded there, with little alternative but a lengthy land journey home.

Iraq has joined several other nations, including the United Arab Emirates, in enforcing the US ban, following Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement that Iranian airlines would be shut down on a specific date. Iraq and Iran, both predominantly Shia-majority countries, have historically maintained close relations due to religious kinship, political and economic interests.
