Iran’s president says supreme leader backs new plan to reopen Hormuz

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has confirmed that a six-member team has been discussing a new proposal to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The team, comprising representatives from various organizations including the military, parliament and government, has been given the authority to make decisions on the matter.

Pezeshkian stated that Tehran's new plan to reopen the strait has been coordinated with Supreme Leader Khamenei, as reported by state media based on an interview with US media. During an interview with CBS, Pezeshkian also expressed that Iran would fulfill its obligations if the US agrees to the proposal, which could potentially resolve the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil supply, has been a point of contention between Iran and the US. Both nations are currently deadlocked in their dispute, which has persisted for nearly seven months. Pezeshkian emphasized that if the US accepts the proposal and fulfills its obligations, Iran would reciprocate, effectively ending the current deadlock.

However, Washington has not yet publicly responded to Iran's proposal. Reports suggest that former President Donald Trump had previously rejected the plan, which calls for a cessation of hostilities in the Middle East. The proposal is based on a memorandum of understanding signed with the US in June, which includes the release of frozen Iranian assets estimated to be worth at least $12 billion, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and the end of the US naval blockade on Iran.
