Kiambu bans unlicensed collection of empty alcohol bottles

Kiambu County has imposed a ban on unlicensed individuals collecting empty wine and spirit bottles, due to concerns that these containers are being diverted to illegal distillers for repackaging illicit alcoholic drinks. County Commissioner George Matundura issued an immediate halt to the practice, stating that only licensed collectors will be permitted to gather empty alcohol containers.

Authorities have received reports that some collected bottles are being sold to illegal alcohol manufacturers to package suspected illicit second-generation alcoholic drinks. Matundura addressed this during a local TV station interview on September 26, 2026, in Kabete Constituency, following a raid on a suspected illegal distillery as part of a 14-day operation targeting the production and distribution of illicit drinks.

He also directed bar owners to strictly adhere to regulations for selling and handling alcoholic beverages, warning enforcement agencies will continue targeting those suspected of facilitating illicit alcohol's manufacture or distribution. Kiambu Police Commander Kennedy Semeny confirmed one arrest during the Muguga operation and the seizure of a vehicle linked to alcohol transportation, while another vehicle, a Toyota Noah, is being pursued for potential involvement in the illicit alcohol trade.

Authorities are urging citizens to report suspected illegal alcohol production and distribution while the multi-agency operation persists.
