Iran president says supreme leader backs new plan to reopen Hormuz

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran's new plan to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz had been coordinated with the country's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. This was revealed in an interview with US media, as reported by state media. Pezeshkian also informed CBS that Iran would honor its commitments if the United States agreed to the proposal, according to excerpts released by IRNA.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil trade and a significant point of contention in the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which has been stalled for nearly seven months. Pezeshkian emphasized that coordination with the revolution's leader—the supreme leader—had taken place. He added that if the US accepted the plan and fulfilled its obligations, Iran would reciprocate, thereby eliminating any issues.

A six-member team in Iran, comprising representatives from various organizations and bodies including the military, parliament, and government, has been engaged in discussions and has the authority to make decisions. This team has been working on the plan, which includes conditions similar to those outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed with the US in June.

These conditions involve the release of frozen Iranian assets valued at least $12 billion, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and an end to the US naval blockade of Iran. Pezeshkian stated that Iran would be prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US met these conditions.
