Iran president says supreme leader backs new plan to reopen Hormuz

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian revealed on Saturday that his government's new plan to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz had been coordinated with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, according to state media. The comments were made in an interview with US media, as reported by CBS.

Pezeshkian stated that if the United States agrees to the proposal and fulfills its obligations, Iran would reciprocate, resolving the ongoing deadlock with Washington after nearly seven months of negotiations. He emphasized that the coordination was carried out with Khamenei, who is often referred to as the "leader of the revolution."

A six-member team within Iran, comprising representatives from various organizations, including the military, parliament, and government, has been involved in discussions and has the authority to make decisions, Pezeshkian added.

Washington has not publicly responded to Iran's proposal, but reports suggest that former President Donald Trump had previously rejected it. The plan, which mirrors a memorandum of understanding signed with the US in June, calls for the release of frozen Iranian assets valued at least $12 billion, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and an end to the US naval blockade of Iran.
