This Chuseok, it is important to remember the seasonal workers who help plant and harvest the food we enjoy. Many of the Korean farmers I’ve worked with have treated me like a son because of my dedication and positive attitude. As a seasonal worker from Laos, I was born in a poor village and struggled with my family to put food on the table.

Now, I work alongside others growing lettuce, potatoes, and carrots in the Pyeongchang region to support my family. To come to Korea, I saved up money and paid for the necessary expenses, including a visa and health check. However, my initial placement didn’t meet my needs, so I was moved to three different farms over five months.

One workplace lacked basic amenities, and I was assaulted by coworkers at another. I had to endure harsh working conditions and verbal abuse before returning home. Korea must improve policies for migrant workers, allowing them to switch jobs without issue if they face abuse or are withheld wages. Recently, another seasonal worker from Laos died due to excessive heat.

It is crucial that supervisors take breaks into account and prioritize workers' safety over profits. Seasonal workers contribute significantly to Korea’s farming industry, and I hope they will be treated with respect and dignity as neighbors working alongside each other.
