FG evacuates another 105 Nigerians from South Africa

The Nigerian government has transported an additional 105 citizens to Lagos from South Africa, following a spate of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks on the African nation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the returnees – comprising 82 adults and 23 children – disembarked from South African Airways Flight SA060 on Thursday evening.

Officials from various government agencies received the evacuees upon their arrival. The latest operation marks the 13th consular evacuation from South Africa since the initiative began on June 10, 2026. The total number of Nigerian nationals evacuated from South Africa now stands at 1,821, with 1,388 fully funded by the federal government.

The evacuation of 100 returnees was funded by a donation of $265,854 from the Redeemed Christian Church of God, while the remaining five were flown out with assistance from a private Nigerian citizen. Nigeria's diplomatic mission continues discussions with RCCG leaders in South Africa, as well as other philanthropic groups and individuals, to facilitate the evacuation of additional distressed Nigerians.

The government has also engaged with the RCCG and other partners to assist Nigerians in repatriation from South Africa. The Federal Government remains vigilant about attacks against Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa, committing to diplomatic efforts and measures to protect the safety and security of Nigerians in the diaspora.
