Homes swept away, communities cut off as floods hit North East Gonja

Torrential rainfall in the North East Gonja District of the Savannah Region has led to devastating floods, affecting over 246 residents and destroying 93 houses. The disaster has not only taken away homes but also food, farm produce, livestock, and access to essential services like markets and healthcare. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reported that continuous rainfall began on Wednesday, causing significant damage to a key feeder road that connects affected communities to markets and healthcare facilities.

Residents, such as Luckman Musah, have lost valuable food stocks and livestock to the floods, pleading for immediate government and stakeholder support. The destruction of the feeder road has exacerbated the situation, cutting off communities like Lantung Park, Kedingi, and Kanankula, and hindering the movement of people, farm produce, and essential goods.

Businesses in the area are struggling due to the disrupted access, and the situation could further impact food and other essential goods supply if the road remains inaccessible.

The District Chief Executive for North East Gonja, Abdul Mumin Ewuntomah, warned that the damaged road could also affect access to healthcare services in nearby areas, urging the National Security, Ministry of Roads and Highways, and the Department of Feeder Roads to prioritize the road's repair as an emergency. While residents await government assistance, community members and the district assembly are mobilizing resources to create a temporary crossing and are awaiting road-construction equipment to expedite the restoration of the damaged road.
