Colson Montgomery of White Sox strikes out for the 224th time, a major league season record

Chicago White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery shattered a major league season record by striking out for the 224th time in the fifth inning of Friday night's game against the Colorado Rockies. Montgomery, who batted left-handed, was set down looking with a 3-2 count against Colorado's right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano. The 24-year-old left-hander reached the milestone in his 631st plate appearance and 561st at-bat of his second season in the majors.

Montgomery surpassed Mark Reynolds' previous record of 223 strikeouts, which Reynolds set in 2009 while playing for Arizona. Reynolds had a strong season that year, hitting .260 with 44 homers, 102 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases. Montgomery entered Friday's game batting .200 with 31 homers and 87 RBIs, and had 112 hits and 54 walks in 561 at-bats.

In his last 20 games before Friday, Montgomery struggled, batting .088 with 36 strikeouts in 79 plate appearances, including six hits - two homers and two doubles - and seven walks. The White Sox secured a playoff berth on Thursday with a 9-1 victory over Kansas City, becoming the first team to reach the postseason following two consecutive 100-loss seasons.
