At UN, Russia and Germany's top diplomats hold first talks since 2022

New York, September 26 - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, convened in New York for the first diplomatic discussions since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Relations between Moscow and Berlin, a close ally of Ukraine, have been severed since the Russian invasion, and tensions have further escalated following a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August.

During a news conference, Lavrov claimed that he had not gleaned any new information from his German counterpart, stating that the matter could have been resolved through correspondence with a simple statement. Despite the frosty atmosphere, the ministers discussed bilateral ties and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The German Foreign Minister used the opportunity to press Lavrov to make an effort to reach an agreement on grain exports via the Black Sea, a critical concern for both sides. Additionally, the meeting aimed to revive Russia and Ukraine's blocked grain and energy exports, which have been significantly disrupted by attacks on vessels and port infrastructure.

Lavrov mentioned that Russia was in negotiations with India, Egypt, and Turkey regarding proposals to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea, potentially through bilateral agreements with these nations. However, he blamed Ukraine for the attacks on vessels and emphasized that discussions should be based on mutual demands rather than requests.

Ukraine has also expressed openness to agreements but holds Russia responsible for the war's fallout and the resulting food shortages in various countries, particularly in the Global South.

Germany reiterated its stance, stating that a pragmatic solution could pave the way for further concrete steps. The German government concluded that Russia was responsible for the attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport, leading to the closure of a consulate and a Russian cultural center in Berlin. The Russian embassy in Berlin dismissed the allegations as a fabricated provocation and a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria.

Wadephul urged Russia to abandon the path of escalation vis-à-vis Germany, Europe, and NATO, emphasizing that incidents like the attempted attack would not undermine Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine.
